Track Preparation
- The track should be constructed per the surface data sheet.
- For best results, use new ballast, ties, and rail.
- Timber ties should be of good quality and in the same plane. Ties that are twisted or not set flat should be adzed or replaced.
- Ties should measure 8'6" or 9' and must be placed 18" center-to-center.
- Rail should be welded. Grind welds smooth to avoid interfering with panels.
- Make certain that track gauge is 56 1/2".
- Sweep the ties and rail to remove ballast and debris which may interfere with seating of the panels.

Installation Steps
- Place the gauge wood shims centered between the rails and nail in place with the 7" x 5/16" nails provided.
- Place the field shims even with the end of the tie and nail in place with the 7" x 5/16" nails provided.
- After the shims are nailed in place, nail the cushion strips centered on the shims with the 1 1/4" nails.
- Place the first rubber gauge panel at the center of the crossing with one flangeway under the ball of one rail. Using track bars, pry up the center of the panel, while forcing the opposite flangeway under the ball of the opposite rail. Align the panels so that the edges are centered on shims (for transverse installation).
- Using a 5/8" auger bit, pre-drill holes through the shims only. Blow out debris from the drilled holes.
- Using a torx bit, drive the timber screws so that the screw head is tight against the bottom of the counterbore holes. A slight deflection in the OMNI panel will indicate that the timber screw is fastened tight enough. Do not over or under tighten the screws.
- Place a rubber plug over each screw head and drive it flush with the panel surface with a sledge hammer.
- As the remaining panels are installed, make sure that the tread pattern is running in the same direction. Be certain all panels are squeezed tightly together when drilling and fastening, to obtain a tight seal between the panels.
- Next, install the field panels beginning at the center of the crossing. Keep the panels pressed tightly against the rail while pre-drilling lag-holes and installing the timber screws.
- Install the header material. Hold the top edge of the header material at the bottom edge of the field panels and nail it securely to the shim ends with the 2" galvanized nails provided.
- Install end deflectors if ordered.
