Full-Depth Heavy Duty Crossings Installation Instructions

Track Preparation

  1. The track structure should be constructed per the Surface Data Sheet.

  2. For best results, use new ballast, ties and rail.

  3. Timber ties should be of good quality and in the same plane. Ties that are twisted or not set flat should be adzed or replaced.

  4. Ties should measure 8'6" or 9' and must be placed at 18" center-to-center.

  5. Rail should be welded. Grind welds smooth to avoid interfering with panels.

  6. Make certain that track gauge is 56 1/2".

  7. Sweep the ties and rail to remove ballast and debris which may interfere with seating of the panels.

Installation Steps

  1. Select a tie near the center of the crossing so that the distance to one end of the crossing is in increments of 3 or 6 feet.

  2. Place a gauge panel with one flangeway under the ball of the rail. Make sure one end of the panel is positioned on the selected centerline of the crossing.

  3. Using track bars, or an end loader, force the opposite flangeway under the ball of the rail.

  4. Pre-drill through the panel's lag holes into the wood ties. Drill the bit into the wood tie until the tip of the drill chuck is flush with the top of the OMNI panel. Be sure to drill vertical holes.

  5. Using the torx bit, drive the timber screws so that the screwhead is tight against the bottom of the counterbore hole. A slight deflection in the OMNI panel will indicate that the timber screw is fastened tight enough. Do not over or under tighten the screws.

  6. Place a rubber plug over each screw head and drive it flush with the panel surface with a sledge hammer.

  7. Align the field panels with the previously fastened gauge panel. Align the field panels square with the rails. Make sure both ends of the panels are placed on the centerline of the ties.

  8. Squeeze the field panels tight against the ball of the rail while pre-drilling and fastening. Follow steps 4 through 6 for fastening the two center field panels.

  9. Position no more than four lengths of panels on either side of the fastened center gauge and field panels. Using a trackjack, force panels lengthwise to ensure a tight fit. Make sure panel ends are centered on ties. Maintain pressure until the panels are fastened. Note: during hot weather, install only two panel lengths at a time.

  10. Install end deflectors if ordered.
